David Griffen is a multidisciplinary artist and photographer whose practice spans more than two decades of image-making, book design, and object-making.

For over 20 years, David has worked internationally as a professional food photographer, collaborating with leading chefs, restaurants, and publishers. He has produced and art-directed numerous cookbooks, and his work has been recognised with awards including the much-coveted Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year. His commercial practice, Kitchen Studio continues to specialise in creating distinctive imagery for food brands, producers, and venues.

Alongside this career, David has always cultivated a deep connection to materials, form, and the storytelling potential of objects. His extensive props collection – assembled through years of photographic work – has become a resource and a springboard for new creative directions. In 2020, after relocating to Australia with his family, he established a darkroom and returned to the alchemy of silver-gelatin printing. His black and white botanical studies of Australian flora have since been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Newcastle and beyond.

More recently, David’s practice has expanded into ceramics, driven by a desire to create functional tableware for the studio. This exploration evolved into Kiln Australia, a professional practice producing slip-cast and hand-finished vessels printed with images of native flora. The work bridges food, photography, and craft, with pieces now held in gallery shops and private collections.

David’s exhibitions range from intimate solo shows of botanical still life to larger group presentations, reflecting an ongoing interest in the intersection of photography, nature, and material culture. His work – whether on paper or in clay – seeks to honour the striking forms of Australian flora and the quiet narratives found in still life.
